• Alternative Character Interpretation: There's some who believe that the captain's slip was deliberate with reasons ranging from loyalty towards Iroh to having been a part of the unit that was to be used as sacrificial bait for an Earth Kingdom army and later hearing how Zuko objected to the plan.
• Fanon: It's generally accepted by fans that Azula killed the Captain offscreen for letting it slip that Zuko and Iroh were prisoners, especially since that was what was going to happen before it was cut for being too dark.
• Genius Bonus: Zuko and Iroh cutting off their topknots, while done for the sake of hiding from Azula, is also a reference to the real life practice of Samurai cutting off their topknots when they forsook being a samurai. Like the samurai Iroh and Zuko are leaving their old life of privilege and status behind.
