YMMV / Asterix & Obelix: The Middle Kingdom

• Critic-Proof: The film received generally dismal reviews and low audience scores, but it opened strong and ended up the third most successful film of 2023 at the French box office behind The Super Mario Bros. Movie and Barbie (though it still ended up a bomb due to its humongous cost).
• The Scrappy: The character who seems to be the most hated by far is Graindemais (Jonathan Cohen), coming across as particularly obnoxious, annoying and unfunny.
• Signature Scene: For what it's worth, the movie gained a bit of notoriety in the Team Fortress 2 community upon fans noticing that during a battle scene one of Soldier's screams is used for a Roman legionary charging at Asterix before being punched down.
• Tainted by the Preview: It's the first Asterix film to get truly massive and lopsided amounts of downvotes on its trailers, with the unfunny/unimaginative Cringe Comedy being regularly cited as the reason.
• Took the Bad Film Seriously: While other actors, such as Jonathan Cohen or Marion Cotillard, got backlash for their performances, Gilles Lellouche's rendition of Obelix was generally praised, to the point some viewers did not notice he was not Gérard Depardieu.
