Cock-a-Doodle-Dog is a 1951 animated short (6 min.) directed by Tex Avery.

Spike the bulldog comes home dog tired and ready for a good night's sleep. Unfortunately, the barnyard rooster procedes to keep him awake with his incessant crowing. The cartoon thus follows Spike's attempts to shut the rooster up once and for all, with hilarious results.

Tropes present in this short:

  • Bring the Anchor Along: Fed up with the rooster's constant crowing, Spike takes him out to the mountains far away from the farm and ties him to a tree. When Spike returns to the farm to sleep, the rooster returns, as well, still tied to the tree and crowing away.
  • The Cat Came Back: No matter what Spike does to the rooster, it always comes back for more.
  • Cock-a-Doodle Dawn: Spike is kept awake by a rooster with an obnoxious crow. After various attempts to shut it up, Spike decides to keep it awake by crowing at him all night.
  • A Taste of Their Own Medicine: After the rooster goes to bed, Spike start crowing to keep him awake.
  • Timber!: Spike moves the rooster's coop under a tree, then starts chopping it down. He runs the other way and starts yelling "TIIIIM — the tree falls on him — ...ber."
