Fujin: I have faith. You should too.
A conversation between Raiden and Fujin about Liu Kang in Chapter 89.

Mortal Kombat Genesis is a webcomic adaptation of Mortal Kombat by wren and twennywan. It is an adaptation of the final tournament between Earthrealm and Outworld, that stars Liu Kang in his journey through the tournament in order to save his realm. All the while, Scorpion and Quan Chi work together to kill Sub-Zero, Kitana and Mileena seek revenge on Raiden for killing their mother, and Shang Tsung intends to corrupt Liu Kang into being his servant.

Mortal Kombat Genesis provides examples of:

  • Actually Pretty Funny: Fujin is seen visibly smirking when Johnny Cage assumes that everything he's seeing is part of a movie set, compared to everyone else present's frustration.
  • Adaptational Angst Upgrade: Liu Kang is far more uncertain about his ability to save Earthrealm compared to the main series.
  • Adaptational Early Appearance: Many characters appear at the tournament who never did so in the main series, such as Fujin, Kobra and Mavado.
  • Adaptational Jerkass: Raiden is far harsher about winning the tournament compared to his other counterparts, to the point of insisting that Liu Kang needs to kill in order to win.
  • Big Bad: Shang Tsung serves as the main villain, being the host of the tournament.
  • The Corrupter: Shang Tsung intends to be this to Liu Kang, wanting a spectre to serve him much like Scorpion does with Quan Chi.
  • Greater-Scope Villain: Though Shang Tsung is the Big Bad, Shao Kahn is the one responsible for the tournament happening and Shang is hosting it under his orders.
