When the trailer for Journey of Sodor, and eventually the special, came out, long-time fans were appalled and seek out to remake the special to correct everything that it did wrong. - Big Bad Ensemble: Like in the original special, there are Frankie & Hurricane, who are mostly the same with some minor differences, but there are also the Mainland Diesels, trying to scrap James and Sir Topham Hatt's engines.
- Big Bad Duumvirate: Becomes this after the revelation that Frankie set up James being taken by the diesels just so she could have some wheels for the steelworks.
- The Bus Came Back: Even thought this isn't canon, it still nice to see Boco not only appearing after years of absence, but also having a big impact in the movie, as the catalyst for the entire plot, having be tricked by James so he could go to the mainland.
- Big Damn Heroes: The Flying Scotsman and Hiro helps the heroes by going at a snail's pace and pulling a goods train respectively. Even Samson and Bradford aids in.
- Crapsack World: The Mainland is basically this.
Gordon: How many times have you been to the Mainland, little Thomas? Two-Three times. I go everyday and trust me, it's a horrid place. Any steam engines who goes past Barrow is doomed.
- Save the Villain: When Frankie was on the edge of falling over the Vicarstown bridge, Harvey took no chances and immediately pull her back into rails.
- Small Role, Big Impact: Despite only appearing in the beginning, Boco swapping places with James when he tricked him about the Fat Controller switching their jobs in an attempt to get to the Mainland is the main reason on why the engines went on to search for him.
