• Copiously Credited Creator: Shinkai did everything himself, except for the music and voice acting. In the original cut, he even did the voice work — he and his fiancée acted out all the roles. After the film's phenomenal success, a new voice track with professional voice actors was created for a wider release.
• No Export for You: While the film proper, manga and Words of Love/Across the Stars have translated releases, the first light novel still does not.
• Technology Marches On: Despite the fact that it is 2046, cell phones resemble their counterparts from the 1990s, complete with their bulky chassis and small green LCD displays.
