  • Saved from Development Hell: Originally, Henri Georges Clouzot had written the screenplay as a response to the Nouvelle Vague, and specifically their criticisms of his films. The film was to star Romy Schneider and Serge Reggiani, and started shooting in 1964 in France. However, after three weeks, the film was abandoned because of the extreme heat, as well as Reggiani falling ill (Jean-Louis Trintignant was considered to replace him), and Clouzot himself suffering a heart attack. When Claude Chabrol decided to make the film nearly 30 years later (ironic, as he was one of those who attacked Clouzot's films), he used Clouzot's script.
