• Cross-Dressing Voices: Tress MacNeille voiced Spud.
• Executive Meddling: In one of the rare examples that actually helped the show rather than harmed it, the original line describing Hitler's car at the carnival mentioned that it was in Disney's Electric Light Parade. The legal team for FOX begged them not to use that line for fear of a lawsuit, so the line was changed to being the first car with "farfegnugen"^note the German word for "driving pleasure".
• What Could Have Been: Several endings to the episode were considered; in one of them, Homer genuinely did wager the house on the ring toss (and win).
• Write What You Know: The carnival was based on The Eastern States Exposition (currently known as The Big E) fair. As a child, Mike Scully went to the fair, and had hoped one day to be a carny.
• Write Who You Know: Cooder was modeled after David Mirkin, the showrunner of seasons five and six and co-writer and the executive producer of two episodes in the ninth season.
