• Creator's Favorite Episode: Nancy Cartwright named this as one of her favourites.
• Deleted Scene: After Bart called the two lizards funky looking birds Homer says "Oh everyone's ugly when they're born" and says to Marge how he remembers how ugly Lisa was when she was born. Marge says that Lisa wasn't ugly, she was beautiful, but continues her sentences saying her head was just a little misshaped.
• In Memoriam: This episode is dedicated to Phil Hartman, who makes his final Simpsons appearance as Troy McClure in this episode. His last line is "It sure is, Billy, it sure is." It aired five months after his death.^note The dedication had previously been seen on a repeat of "Bart Carny", which was the first episode to air after Phil's death. As it was not an episode premiere, it was repeated for this one, which is widely considered to be the one truly dedicated to him.
• What Could Have Been: The story was originally a B-plot of Homer saving a bird's nest from winter, that didn't have an A-plot.
