• China Doubling: Some scenes in the movie were filmed in Kashgar, China (a city in the far western part of China) instead of Afghanistan, because there wasn't any snow in Kabul in the summer.
• Weapons Understudies: As a result, the production ends up using many Chinese derivatives of Soviet weapons, which were readily available (eg. Norinco Type 56 assault rifle standing in for the original AK and AKM). This turns out to be a case of Accidentally-Correct Writing as the Taliban did extensively use these Chinese weapons alongside their arsenal of captured Soviet weapons.
