Trivia / The Four Freshmen

• Hitless Hit Album: Many of their albums in the 1950's and early 1960's sold well despite having no singles released from them.
• The Pete Best: Marvin Pruitt and Nancy Sue Carson, who were in the band back in the "Hal's Harmonizers" days. Pruitt left due to stage fright; Carson, the girlfriend and future wife of Ross Barbour, replaced him at first but the others felt that a fourth guy would be more appropriate for the sound they were seeking and eventually had her replaced by Bob Flanigan.
• Throw It In!: Just before a show in El Paso on December 8, 1951, Don Barbour broke the high E string on his guitar. Since he didn't have a spare high E string, he took a G string and tuned it an octave lower. The unique sound that it produced became part of the Four Freshmen sound.
• What Could Have Been: During the interim period when the Four Freshmen weren't under contract to Capitol and "It's a Blue World" was a hit in Detroit, Mercury and Decca were both interested in signing the quartet. If such a deal would have gone through, the band wouldn't have been able to re-record that song for at least seven years. ^note The group did eventually record for Decca a one-off single in 1966 after their contract with Capitol ended.
