  • Box Office Bomb: Only made $2 million on a nearly-$30 million budget, thanks to Columbia opting to give it a limited release.
  • Keep Circulating the Tapes: The Director's Cut, which is 25 minutes longer than the theatrical cut, was released on LaserDisc in 1992, and then vanished off the face of the earth for 31 years before Criterion announced in 2023 that it would be included, in black-and-white, as an HD bonus feature on their 4K UHD release of The Last Picture Show alongside the theatrical cut in color. The original color version of the director’s cut is still this, however.
  • Screwed by the Network: Columbia didn't handle the release very well. They originally promised to re-release The Last Picture Show first, which would've re-familiarized the public with the characters and setting, but decided against it. Then they had Bogdanovich trim several minutes from the film to help avoid Continuity Lock-Out for people who hadn't seen the first film. But ultimately Columbia decided it didn't have much hit potential and dumped it into theaters without much fanfare.
  • Sequel Gap: Made 19 years after The Last Picture Show.
