  • The Other Marty: As noted on other pages, an otherwise-unknown actress named Melissa Brown was the original voice of Alice in the pilot. She was replaced by Christy Karacas in the post-production ADR period, as Nick Weidenfeld felt her voice wasn't suited to the characternote  and recommended Karacas voice Alice instead. She was removed so late that her name is still listed in the voice cast in the ending.
  • Schedule Slip: Adult Swim and Christy Karacas originally had hoped for the pilot to air in September 2005, and it was initially advertised as such in the network's announcement of new shows. However, the crew hit delays due to having to revise the script several times before it could be approved for production (they went through at least 15 drafts by Karacas' recollection). They also wanted to make the pilot be more effectively humorous. The pilot finally went into production in mid-late 2006, and was put into the network's "Night of 1,000 pilots" event the following year.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • The little girl was going to be Jacknife's daughter and was identified as such in early concept art of the cast. Karacas and Warbrick decided it would be funnier if Jacknife just carjacked someone and found their daughter, so the familial connection was removed.
    • The Warden had a ''vastly'' different design, where he sported stubble and wore a black version of his suit. His Round Hippie Shades and top hat were only added when he was redesigned to be more of a Wonka-type, as well as further resemble David Wain. Gary's design also changed, with his hairstyle and face being tweaked some. Alice, Jailbot, and Jared only received minor tweaks to their color schemes (although Alice also gained an overbite), and the Twins didn't really change much at all.
    • The jailyard also had a different design, with things like pyramids and merry-go-rounds in it. The eye-craft also was smaller, with an open-top design from where the Warden would pilot it and the rest of the staff would ride along inside.
    • For the pilot and general series, the Twins were going to be the rivals to the Warden, and would have been more flat-out "evil" and less laid-back.
    • A scrapped sequence (that didn't even make it to the reel seen on DVD) included Jacknife being shot off to a long-abandoned lunar version of Superjail, before exploding and dying due to the vacuum of outer space.
    • Jacknife also spoke in one of the script drafts, but it was decided it'd be for the best if he remained silent and unintelligible.
    • Alice's first line was originally her asking the starving inmate "Do you think I'm sexy?". After Christy Karacas re-recorded Melissa Brown's lines, he changed that line to be "Hey Skinny, it's showtime".
    • The Twins' techno backbeat was much different in the animatic reel, sounding more spacey and like an '80s New Wave beat than the thumping beat they'd be known for.
    • Pre-ordered copies of the season 1 DVD each came with a storyboard card that would feature an early draft of a scene from the pilot. Among the sketches, the Gay Inmates were shown to have rather different designs (although the idea of them being an interracial couple carried through), and one draft showed the rabbit-suited one stabbing the wolf-suited one with a "promise shank", instead of the other way around. One storyboard draft also showed the Twins looking confused and shrugging, with large question marks appearing beside them. This scene appears to have been one that was cut through the revisions to the script (before the animatic).
