• Cast the Runner-Up: Renata Cobbs auditioned for the role of Opal Gilstrap. Spike Lee liked her audition and cast her as Shawn.
• Creator Backlash: Spike Lee told The Huffington Post in 2014 that he regretted including the scene in which Jamie rapes Nola:
  If I was able to have any do-overs, that would be it. It was just totally...stupid. I was immature. It made light of rape, and that's the one thing I would take back. I was immature and I hate that I did not view rape as the vile act that it is.
• No Budget: The movie was shot in twelve days on a budget of $175,000. The budget was so low that they couldn't afford any retakes.
• Throw It In!: The famous "Please baby please baby please" line was not in the script. Spike Lee forgot the lines after "Please baby" and kept repeating it. Since it played so well, he kept it in the movie.
