Trivia / Plague Inc.

  • Approval of God: In an odd case of this not happening to a fan work, the creators of the game were invited to the CDC.
  • Ascended Fanfic: Many custom scenarios for Plague Inc. focused around trying to cure whatever it is the scenario covered. On March 24th 2020, The Cure was announced, which allows you to do exactly that.
  • Banned in China: Plague Inc. was pulled from the app store in China for "illegal content" shortly after the COVID-19 pandemic caused it to surge to the top of the nation's gaming charts. It's widely speculated that the decision was spurred on by the game being used in Chinese memes criticizing the government's response to the virus. The Cure Mode DLC later managed to make its way to the Chinese Steam store as a standalone game called "Cure Inc. Operation: Save the World" (解药公司:救世行动).
  • Colbert Bump: The app tends to gain a boost in popularity every time a disease epidemic makes the news, but the most notable example was when the app became a best-seller in China during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic. The creators actually commented on this surge, stating that while the game is meant to be realistic, it was never meant to predict or capitalize on real-life epidemics (the reason many downloaded the game) and that people should look toward official public health sources instead.
  • What Could Have Been: There was an official HIV scenario planned for Mutation 1.7, but it was never made. It was thought to be scrapped due to the scenario potentially bumping up the age rating for the game, as an unused graphic in the files suggests a unique trait where the disease can pass through the condom barrier. The developer debunked this on Reddit and explained that the actual reason they scrapped it is because they didn't want to make light of people who were suffering from the disease.
