Trivia / Neil Diamond

  • Doing It for the Art: After scoring his early hits on Bang Records, Diamond had a major falling out with label chief Bert Berns over "Shilo". Diamond was very passionate about this deeply personal song and wanted it released as a single. Berns didn't think it was commercial enough and kept it as an album track. After Berns died suddenly on December 30, 1967, Diamond ended up leaving Bang for Uni Records, where he became an even bigger star. (Diamond's labelmate Van Morrison reached a similar impasse with Berns over artistic freedom issues, and also left Bang after Berns died). Ironically, to cash in on Diamond's Uni success, Bang released a remixed version of "Shilo" as a single in 1970.
