  • The episode bears similarities to the G1 episode "Spike's Search", with Spike trying to learn to be more like a dragon and some dragons taking advantage of him and the ponies' generosity. Sludge even has the same base color scheme.
  • The episode repeats a lot of what "Dragon Quest" touched upon, namely Spike's conflict of identity between being a dragon and being a pony and trying to be a "real" dragon by following the example of a Jerkass dragon who mistreats him, and when he comes to his senses he embraces who he is anew not caring about his race or their typical behaviors. The difference here is that a dragon comes to Ponyville, rather than Spike traveling to the Dragon Lands, and claims to be related to him.
