• Abandonware: In a similar vein to UTAU, MMD is slowly becoming incompatible with modern versions of Windows (perhaps even moreso than UTAU, due to its reliance on old versions of DirectX and .NET Framework that have since become obsolete and fallen victim to Keep Circulating the Tapes) and hasn't received a major update in some time, with the last feature update being 9.27 in 2016 and the last bugfix being 9.32 from 2019. Sadly, most other attempts at alternatives (most notably MikuMikuMoving and nanoem) are early in development, incredibly obscure, or both. With more recent attempts being means to import the file formats into programs like DAZ3D and Blender.
• Pop-Culture Urban Legends: Some have claimed that the reason MikuMikuDance's source code was never released is that HiguchiM's wife, angered by how much time he was spending on developing the program, went out and destroyed every copy of the source code he had made out of rage and spite. There is very little evidence confirming this to be true, however.
