The couple divorced in 2016, two years after they had announced their intent to create a feature film; Marcel laid dormant for the better part of a decade while the former couple still tried to get the movie made. This context is reflected in two ways in the final film: Fleischer Camp's documentarian character is living in Marcel's home because he is getting a divorce, and Marcel's family was separated after the couple he had lived with several years previously broke up.
