Trivia / LEGO Super Mario

Go To

  • Creator's Oddball: The theme acts as this in regard to LEGO's typical approach with licensed sets. Most licensed LEGO sets tend to be traditional LEGO sets with minifigs included. Instead of this approach, LEGO Mario goes for a drastically different idea, going for more of a freedom-based sandbox layout approach that allows the buyer to build and connect different sets to replicate Mario levels (acting almost like a physical version of Super Mario Maker). It also lacks traditional minifigures, instead having enemies being buildable from bricks, with Mario and Luigi being depicted as giant, electronic figures that can interact with the sets.
  • First Appearance: Boomer Bill, a rocket-powered super version of Bullet Bill, was introduced to the Mario franchise in a set themed around it.
  • Official Fan-Submitted Content: The app allows users to upload photos of their custom courses as suggestions for other players to build and play.
  • Screwed by the Network: The Thwomp Drop Expansion Set only got a very limited release at the end of the first year, barely showing up in physical stores before being retired as the second year sets started pouring in. Not only that, but it ended up on the mid-range price point (about $40 US), despite being of similar size and complexity to a "deluxe" (~$20) set. Fortunately, several online stores overstocked it due to the overall success of the line, though this hasn't stopped collectibles dealers from trying to push them for twice as much on eBay.
    • The same can be said for the Monty Mole & Super Mushroom expansion set. The small set itself was released as an early promotional limited release. Coming out much earlier before the other first wave series took off. The set's original price was then $14.99 (from both retailers and the official LEGO site). The sets currently now can range up as high as $120 (right up in the ratio of "deluxe" level sets like "Bowser's Castle"). And, in a collectors market can range more than even that in some cases...
