- Inspiration for the Work: Seanan McGuire has stated
that part of her inspiration for writing InCryptid was a Take That! against Supernatural for the writers' treatment of Jo Harvelle. Verity in particular is partially a tribute to Jo. - Tribute to Fido: Of Seanan's many cats, three are named Alice, Thomas, and Elsie. Sadly, Alice has since passed away.
- Word of Gay: In a Zoom workshop, Seanan confirmed that James is gay, and part of his father's abuse was due to homophobia. She said she would like to write from James's POV, but wants to do him justice, since she's not a gay man and James deserves a romance arc like the other narrators.note This was further supported by Sally's comments in Spelunking Through Hell, saying that Sam "didn't need to worry about James and Antimony".
