  • Executive Meddling: Soviet higher-ups weren't happy that Ilyinsky, who mostly played in comedies, would portray such an iconic figure as Field Marshal Kutuzov, and tried to force the director to replace him.
  • Throw It In!: In the play, Kutuzov’s last line before he leaves used to be: "What a day! What in the world is prettier than the sun?" Then one of the actors who played him in the early productions improvised the following: "Yes, well done! (To Shura, in a whisper) And you would have been prettier as a girl!" The author liked it, and this line was kept and made its way to the film as well.
