Trivia / Gargoyle's Quest

  • Acclaimed Flop: The series was never really a big seller, but Demon's Crest is a...peculiar case. The game sold so poorly that returns outnumbered sales one week. However, those who bought and kept the game praised it for its impressive soundtrack, meticulous sprite art and ambitious, and even a ballsy plot (for a 90s game anyways). The game never gained relevance, but it did earn a sizable fanbase. The game was however released on the 3DS and Wii U Virtual Consoles, and even included in Nintendo Switch Online's SNES lineup. Thanks to these, Demon's Crest now has an improved reputation and is far more appreciated.
  • Completely Different Title: Red Arremer and Red Arremer II for the first two games in Japan, Demon's Blazon for the third.
  • Franchise Killer: A case can be made for ’’Demon's Crest’’ over this, which was so dark and visceral (not to mention ahead of its time) that it never got off the ground commercially. Capcom suffered massive losses thanks to that game, which is why no more games in the Gargoyle's Quest series were released ever again. And yet Firebrand joined the roster for a certain fighting game, which made him popular again.
  • No Export for You: The 2020 Nintendo leaks revealed that Gargoyle's Quest II for the Game Boy was completely translated into English, but Capcom chose not to release it outside Japan for unknown reasons.
  • What Could Have Been: Some early magazine previews for Demon's Crest gave it the (eventually dropped) subtitle Super Gargoyle's Quest, fitting with the Super ____ naming convention that was popular during the SNES' life span.
