• Actor-Shared Background: Like their characters, Midori Francis and Troy Iwata are both half-Japanese and half-Caucasian. Additionally, the show made a point of casting their Japanese-American relatives with actors of the same ancestry.
• Colbert Bump: Although said song was already popular to begin with, Wham!'s "Last Christmas" increased in popularity because of its' usage in the second episode, to the point where it topped the British singles chart the year this show premiered, something which it hadn't done when it was first released.
• Dawson Casting: Twentysomethings Midori Francis and Austin Abrams play seventeen-year-olds Dash and Lily.
• Self-Adaptation: Rachel Cohn, on of the authors of the book, wrote the screenplay for episode seven, "Christmas".
