• The Cast Show Off: Mads Mikkelsen was a dancer in his youth, before he became an actor, and gets to show off his old skills in the film's final scene.
• Reality Subtext: The director Thomas Vinterberg was originally making a much more light-hearted film about the joys of drinking and its effect on human history, based in part on his daughter's anecdotes of her wild drinking escapades. Then his daughter was killed in an auto accident during the filming of the movie, causing Vinterberg to re-write the story to be darker and about awakening to your life.
• What Could Have Been:
  • The film was originally a more lighthearted examination of drinking and its effects on world history. You can still see shades of this in Martin's history class, when he examines the drinking habits of various historical figures.
  • Martin originally had a son and a daughter with the latter played by Thomas Vinterberg's aforementioned daughter Ida. She died before she could film any of her scenes, and Vinterberg had Martin's children as both boys instead.
