General

  • Regardless of it being a children's show, episodes of Wishbone were fairly faithful to the source material, despite some stories depicting sad endings or in the very least bittersweet ones, such as Romeo and Juliet or The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde or The Count of Monte Cristo.

The Wishbone Mysteries #12 — Forgotten Heroes

  • Both Joe and David end up unexpectedly and painfully feeling the harsh reality of racism. After a phone call that ended with David chewed out and hung up on because he was calling from Oakdale, the poor kid morosely wonders if the person on the other end would have been more understanding if they had been aware that David was African-American as well; notably this is one of only a handful of times David's race is relevant and one of the only, if not the only, times this is played for sorrow. Joe on the other hand has a Sins of My Race Group dream where he shows up at a Negro League game to find every single person glaring at him, even wondering if they're thinking about why he has to invade their safe space; he's noticeably rattled when he wakes up.
