Tear Jerker / The Princess Wei Young

• The death of Xin Er's father and grandfather, followed quickly by the apparent death of Jun Tao and her father.
• Xin Er is accused of being a jinx, and is sentenced to being beaten fifty times. Old Granny Li desperately tries to save her, even offering ten years of her life in exchange for Xin Er being pardoned.
• Seventh Concubine begins to realise Xin Er is not Wei Young when she notices Xin Er has a birthmark that Wei Young did not have. The look on her face is heartbreaking.
  • The scene where Xin Er admits she is not Wei Young, and Seventh Concubine's reaction to learning her daughter is dead.
• The real Wei Young's death, and Xin Er making a grave for her.
• Zi Yan's death. To make it worse, she was killed by the man she loved, while pregnant with his child.
• Xin Er is tortured and Bai Zhi is beaten on Chang Le's orders. Once Chang Le leaves, Xin Er crawls to her maid's side and begs her to wake up. Ouch.
  • Later, Chang Ru visits with food and medicine, but is forbidden from giving it to Xin Er. She's forced to leave without delivering it.
• After saving Xin Er, Tuoba Jun admits he loves her. But she has to pretend she doesn't care for him.
  Tuoba Jun: I kept thinking why you would keep this fan. I wondered if you look at this fan every day. When you look at it, do you think of me? It now turns out that it was just my wishful thinking.
  Xin Er: Your Highness is right. It was just your wishful thinking. This fan is but a joke. What is the use of keeping it?
  [She takes the fan from Tuoba Jun and throws it away]
  • Then, after Tuoba Jun leaves, Xin Er runs out to retrieve the fan, and sees passersby walking over it and kicking it out of their way.
• Xin Er writes Tuoba Jun's name on the table while in prison awaiting execution, and wonders if he'll still believe she's guilty of murder after she's dead. Unknown to her, Tuoba Jun is standing just outside her cell. It's a Tear Jerker for him and the audience.
• Chang Le forces Xin Er to attend her wedding to Tuoba Jun, because she knows Xin Er is in love with him and wants to torment her.
• Bai Zhi's death, and Xin Er's reaction.
• Tuoba Jun and Xin Er are both poisoned, and there's only one antidote. So Tuoba Jun gives it to Xin Er, knowing that he will die slowly of the poison. He dies while listening to Xin Er play the zither.
