Tear Jerker / The Brittas Empire

Go To

  • Carole's situation in general. The poor woman has lost her apartment and husband in such a short space of time and is now forced to raise her children behind reception. She's the subject of the occasional comment from Brittas about being unattractive and every opportunity given to her is taken away from her in the most heart-wrenching way possible. No wonder she's so weepy in earlier episodes.
  • In "An Inspector Calls", after a disastrous meeting with the vicious inspector Brian Kitson, Laura finds Brittas acting utterly depressed in his Manager's Office. He's genuinely devastated as he tells Laura that he thinks that it's the end for him and to look after the staff for him in his absence. Sure, it all works out in the end, but it's still heart-wrenching seeing Brittas in this state.
  • In "The Trial", Brittas is accused of possession of drugs and multiple murders, with the evidence seemingly largely stacked against him. When Helen visits him in jail, it's clear that he's depressed over what is happening to him. Sure, he managed to be saved at the last moment, but it's still heartbreaking.
Mr. Brittas: You know what hurts the most, Helen? That prosecutor saying that a man like me should never have been given a position of trust in the community. To see everyone you've devoted your life to just get thrown back in your face.
  • When Gavin's fiancee reappears in "Playing With Fire", Tim fears Gavin will leave him for her, and seeing Tim so absolutely devastated is absolutely heart-wrenching to watch.
  • In "Shall We Dance?", Brittas' budding relationship with Laura is abruptly cut short when Laura decides to reconcile with her husband. At the subsequent dance, it is clear that he's heartbroken over Laura's decision, drunkenly and sadly considering what could have been. Makes you want to hug him.
  • When Brittas performs a Heroic Sacrifice to save Carole in "The Last Day", losing his life in the process, the way his normally apathetic staff all treat him as a hero shows just how deeply his death affected them all. Even Tim and Julie, who hated him the most and had tried on several occasions to get him fired, didn't dare to disrespect him. Of course Brittas would get Kicked Out of Heaven and come back to life during the funeral, but while he was dead the staff were utterly heartbroken.
  • In "Gavin Featherly R.I.P.", Gavin is feared to have committed Suicide by Sea. Whilst it turns out that Gavin survives, it's horrible watching Tim struggle to cope with the apparent loss of his boyfriend. It's most notable when he comes across an image of Gavin in a staff photo, which causes him to break down in tears.
