Tear Jerker / Rudolph and Frosty's Christmas in July

Go To

For an ultimate Rankin-Bass feature-length crossover special, this has a LOT of depressing moments:

  • Milton tearfully explaining his woes to Rudolph and the Frosty family about Lanie and her mother's circus debt predicament, interfering with his upcoming marriage with his girlfriend.
Milton: So you see, Lanie can't even think about romance, and if her mom's show doesn't get a big audience on the 4th, it'll be sold to Sam Spankles on July 6. (tearfully) Lanie will have to go on the road... and we'll never be together.
  • The Frosty family awaiting their demise as the 100 fireworks go off, topped off with an emotional Crystal telling the children to be brave and Frosty singing a brief reprise of "Everything I Always Wanted".
Frosty: Boy, I remember when I could only count to four. The good ol' days...
  • Rudolph, with his nose having been "extinguished", being forced to take the blame for losing the circus money to Sam Spankles.
    • Everybody's reaction to finding out that Rudolph "stole" the money. While he becomes a Broken Pedestal, most of them are more disappointed than angry in their shunning; Lilly is saddened, while Crystal keeps the just-as-disheartened twins away from him. Laine, on the other hand, is furious but Milton tries to give his old friend the benefit of the doubt, only for Rudolph to tell him to leave him alone, giving Milton no choice but to abandon him. Frosty, knowing the truth, tries to reason with his family but Rudolph stops him, knowing that if he tells, then the Snowmen will all melt.
  • His song afterwards, "No Bed of Roses" really tugs at the heartstrings, including when he tries to rub his now-defunct nose into some red glitter. It's especially sad considering how much he's been through in the original special before finally getting the love and respect he deserves. Due to no fault of his own, he's back to being the reindeer that nobody loves.
  • Frosty, being the only one who knows that Rudolph is innocent, giving up his hat to Winterbolt in exchange for Rudolph's nose, especially his song, "Now and Then".
  • Crystal's reaction afterwards, as well as the scene the next morning with everyone mourning for the lifeless snowman.
    Milly: (crying) Oh, Daddy...
Chilly: (crying) But—but— can't he get another hat, Mommy?
Crystal: Children, remember him as he was.
  • The Frosty family melting due to Winterbolt being defeated. It was definitely a good thing Big Ben showed up with Jack Frost.
