  • In "Monster by Moonlight", Evan, a teenager with a terminal heart condition, decides getting lycanthropy is the only way to save his life. It does make him much stronger, but then he eats his father as a werewolf. Though Foster was abusive to him, he's still filled with guilt for years to come.
  • Zeffer was unwillingly turned into a vampire, and Evan had to tell his mother that he died because he was too ashamed of his condition to let her see him.
  • In "The Perfect Shot", Lukas, after dealing with a lifetime of abuse from his mother and sacrificing so much to be with Itanya, including deserting his kingdom, accidentally shoots her, and soon becomes a depressed slump.
  • Alaine finding out that her parens died soon after she was captured by the Alliance in "Chains of Melody", Sebastian because she couldn't get him the cure to his illness, and Rene drank herself to death out of grief from losing her family.
  • Jeimos' life in the Empire of Damijana. They have severe gender dysphoria, their parents neglect them, they have to deal with very demanding schoolwork, their mother goes mad from exposure to arcane particles, and their only friend Felice ends up falsely imprisoned. So they use pyre dust to escape from it all and get addicted. Then their mother gets imprisoned too, and when Jeimos is supposed to negotiate with Serafeen for her release, they end up having to flee the empire for impulsively attacking her and end up homeless in the Zareen Empire for decades.
  • Glenvar finding out about his mother's death in "Age of the Grupphund".
  • When Mr. Ocean's parents died, he became severely depressed and lost the will to live. His brother implanted a hankerleech in his brain which made him addicted to greenbrite pods, pretending he wants to help Ocean with his medicine, but in reality just wanted to cripple him and keep him off the throne. Mr. Ocean thought Solveig got rid of his greenbrite addiction, but after her death, he became depressed again and cultivated his own kind of mushroom, which ended up completely poisoning him.
  • In "Lost and Found", it turns out Abigail has been looking for Evan with no luck for years, while Evan refused to reunite with her and their mother out of guilt over cannibalizing his father.
  • Mr. Ocean's fruitless efforts to rid his body of greenlite in "Fungicide", getting awful symptoms from faulty medicine and is about to give up and go back to Redwood Island alone, forcing Alaine to force feed him his last medicine.
  • Lilian's entire life story. Being orphaned at age six and running away from home because of her aunt's abuse, being adopted by a clan of vampires who isolate her from the outside world, use her as a sexual bait for their victims, and don't allow her to get sunlight which makes her sick, sexually assaulted by her adoptive father who then abuses her harder for tempting him into it, and being forcibly turned into a vampire herself. And if that wasn't bad enough, after Bigbad kills most of the Dusks, she's left alone with Dario, who just doubles down on the abuse and even forces Zeffer to go down on her to "reward" him. And she's so conditioned by her life with Dario that she genuinely loves him and believes he only wants the best for her.
  • Life in Kelvingyard, where slaves are underfed to force them to fight for food, randomly chosen to turn a heavy wheel for several hours a day, and forced to produce children, who are then sold away. Many slaves die of starvation or exhaustion, and those who aren't are sold to often abusive owners.
  • In "The Lycanthrope's Laboratory", Evan meets a dworven lycanthrope who talks about how lycanthropy completely ruined her life, and how she's hopeful that Dr. Lendon will cure her. She dies soon after, alone in her cell, before Evan even learned her name.
  • "From the Ashes" is just one tearjerker after the other: Isaac seeing Hope destroy Destiny's Tome of Infinity, Frederick crying when he thinks his father is dead, and Balthazaar finding out about Feredil's death.
  • "Nymph's Hollow" starts with Flora and the other limniads digging themselves out of the ground in spring, only to find Drifter's Hollow and the forest burned to the ground, desolate after Disgrace's attack and thinking everyone is dead, and beginning to cry. Flora's first act is to build a great wreath to honor the fallen.
  • When Itchy and Mr. Ocean lose Cinnamon in "A Mage in the Making", Ginger finds her and gets so angry with the two that she makes them look for her all day without telling them where she is to teach them a lesson. They probably deserved it, but Itchy's desperation at losing his two-year-old daughter can be hard to read.
  • In "Hereditary", Dr. Che tells Evan that his heart condition is getting worse and he should retire, and he refuses. Across the story he gets more and more stressed out, with Connor having the genius idea to intentionally contract lycanthropy from him despite his warnings, and then Zeffer forcing Connor to leave the Hollow, leading Evan to think he ran away.
  • In "As Nature Intended", Isaac's best friend, his roc Shadow, gets grievously injured, even losing a part of her beak, making her unable to eat on her own. Isaac sees her injuries and is reminded of when he was ten years old and a sparrow he was taking care of died, making him worry that Shadow is dying as well. Thankfully, Shadow recovers and gets a prosthetic beak made for her.
  • In "Pig Bait", Lilian accidentally spills some coffee on Isaac, and thanks to her abusive upbringing with the Dusks, breaks down crying and repeately apologizing, saying that she's bad and needs to be punished. The next day, Alaine and Mr. Ocean have to stop her from trying to drown herself in the lake. Even after Dario is gone, she still has a lot of trauma to work through.
  • In the side story "Love Poison", Morbus gets jealous of Philippa being in a loving relationship with Dr. Che, and puts her in a sleep potion-induced coma, telling Che that it's caused by diabetes and she will die soon. Che falls into despair, barely taking care of himself, crying on Morbus' doorstep and begging her to find a cure, not knowing that she caused it. Thankfully, Morbus eventually has a change of heart and gives Philly the antidote.
