"Oh, Sara. You never got to say goodbye."

Season 1

  • "Bad Mummies" has a musical number where Becca is overwhelmed by motherhood to the point of tears, comparing herself to famously abusive mothers due to struggling to latch the baby. The whole number paints her despair and self loathing (as it is lead by her Shame Wizard) but in this midst of it her need demon begs for someone to give her a hug. Presumably her husband is asleep in the next room and perfectly willing to offer support, but she's so demoralized she cannot even consider him an option.
  • In "International Creature Convention", Emmy ends up turning into a Hateworm for the first time after Rochelle betrays their friendship by sleeping with her crush and starting a relationship with him, and even wins the Dolly Parton award despite her crimes.
  • The end of "The Light" where Sonya continues to watch Claudia from afar after deciding that they cannot continue their romance. It's seems that Claudia can no longer see Sonya, but can still sense her.
  • "It's Almost Over":
    • The A plot of the episode focuses on Yara slowly dying and the effect it has on her son Amir and her love bug Walter. In her final hours, Yara's children and grandchildren arrive to tearfully say goodbye to her. After her passing, Yara's ghost asks Walter to watch after her granddaughter, to whom he has apparently been reassigned.
    • Mixed with Heartwarming, after spending the whole episode being hunted down by Keith from Grief, he finally catches up and Amir is forced to confront the reality that his mother is dying and no amount of logic or denial can stop it. Which lets him finally break down and begin to grieve her before she's gone. When Keith asks what he'd like to do next, he says he'd like to pray for his mother. Which Keith gently encourages him to do.
    • In the same episode as part of the B Plot, poor Emmy has nothing but the most miserable time. After returning to work after humiliating herself at the International Creature Convention, her coworkers gleefully remind her of that incident and insult her, with even Maury and Connie in particular acting uncharacteristically mocking. To make matters even worse, they celebrate Rochelle and Dante's relationship in front of Emmy, and then Dante decides to brag about his love for Rochelle, again in front of Emmy. Things only get worse when Emmy attempts to apologize to Rochelle and Rochelle repays her by being condescending and accusing Emmy of acting like a victim despite having every right to be upset about her best friend sleeping with the guy she was in love with behind her back. Even when Lionel mentions that Rochelle isn't as great as she sees, he still criticizes Emmy for how she behaved even when Emmy's reasons were justified. For all Emmy's flaws, she didn't deserve any of that crap and absolutely nobody (except for probably Pete) gave her any sympathy whatsoever.
  • After a season exploring their tumultuous but passionate relationship, Maury breaks up with Connie in the season finale because she doesn't want to raise a child with him. They both end up in tears as Maury walks away.

Season 2

  • Dante's turned possessive of Rochelle, insisting she stay away from Pete due to Pete's crush on her. When Rochelle calls this out, Dante dumps her on the spot and leaves her in tears, admitting, "I was never in love with you. I was only addicted to you." The fact Rochelle nearly lost her best friend because she trusted that Dante really loved her only makes this more callous, and it kickstarts an arc about Rochelle going full Hate Worm due to her broken heart.
  • Pete finally gets Rochelle's attention, but now that she's a Hate Worm, she only wants him for mindless hate sex. He ends up Drowning His Sorrows and crying, not wanting to lose Rochelle, but not wanting to just be a fucktoy for her either.
  • "Rochelle, Rochelle" has tragedy in both timelines:
    • The Lovebug timeline seems sweet at first, as Rochelle and Pete finally have a genuine relationship... except Rochelle hasn't glowed for him yet. She tries to fake it with a phone, only breaking his heart more. When she tries to confront him, she inadvertently causes an accident that kills most of her coworkers, realizing that choosing love only made things worse. Which leads to...
    • The Hate Worm timeline, where Rochelle pals around with the Hate Division while Emmy and Pete numb themselves with alcohol. This ends up being the real timeline, and Rochelle's eternal hate and Pete's suffering is still a better fate than everybody else dying.
  • In "Paul Me By Your Name," Emmy finally digs deep in the Memory Bank and discovers why Sarah refuses to talk about her mom. Turns out, her mom is Paul's recently-deceased wife Evelyn. Sarah was so convinced that her mom would overcome her cancer that she didn't visit her in the hospital, rationalizing that her mom wouldn't want her to see her like that. Unfortunately, Evelyn never made it out of the hospital, leaving Sara so racked with guilt that she repressed all memories of her mom, positive or negative.
  • “On The Daughterfront” has Sarah go back to her childhood home and break down as she finally talks to Paul about their shared heartbreak over Evelyn’s death. It becomes heartwarming when they reconcile after Sarah allows herself to grieve.
