Episode One: "Chafa"

  • The death of Maya’s mother. The two were simply driving to the store when a car (later revealed to be rival enemies of her father due to his criminal associations) blindsided them—killing Maya’s mother on impact and leaving Maya with a leg pierced by glass, which is later amputated, as a result.
  • At the hospital the young Maya reveals to her father she blames herself as they never would have been hit if she didn't suggest they go to the store.
  • After it comes out that Willie's criminal associations were responsible for his wife's death, Chula tells him in no uncertain terms that he's no longer welcome in Tamaha, which means that he and Maya must head for New York City. Maya is heartbroken when she finds out that she must say goodbye to her beloved cousin Bonnie.

Episode Four: "Taloa"

  • Even after all these years, Fisk, despite his claims that he loves Maya, refuses to learn sign language. Instead, he has his goons hold her down and force a special contact lens onto her eye that translates his spoken words into sign language, while he wears an earbud that translates her sign language into spoken words.
  • Maya reluctantly goes to Chula for insight into the visions she's been having. This attempt at reconciliation breaks down because Chula still won't take any responsibility for how she banished Maya from Tamaha. She tries to insist that she only banned Willy, as if it would have been easy for Maya to disown her own father so soon after losing her mother.
  • When Maya shows up at Fisk's hotel room, he offers her the hammer that he used to murder his dad, inviting her to use it to kill him and take over his empire. It's at this point that Maya realizes just how badly she's misunderstood her relationship with her "Uncle", that he exploited her pain and grief in order to turn her into a weapon.

Episode Five: "Maya"

  • Maya uses her newly gained powers to go into Fisk mind where she sees that even with his father dead his abuse still holds power over Wilson. Maya can only beg and shed tears as she begs Fisk to let her heal him. She sees her uncle is in a way no different than how she was before: someone holding onto the pain of the past and is unable to let it go.
