I am Jazz is a children's book by author Jazz Jennings, about a fictionalised version of her childhood self dealing with being trans.

It talks about how initially her family thought she was a boy, but accepted her as a girl once the doctor explained it to them. It also talks about how pretending to be a boy felt like a lie, and she's much more happy living as a girl.

Compare Heather Has Two Mommies and Daddy's Roommate.

I am Jazz provides examples of

  • Author Avatar: Jazz was named and based on the author as a child.
  • Gender Nonconforming Equals Gay: Jazz says that some signs she's a trans girl are that she likes pink, prefers wearing skirts over pants, and isn't interested in superheroes.
  • Genki Girl: Jazz seems to be energetic as she lists dancing, back flips, soccer, and swimming in her interests, then later she does cartwheels and bounces on the trampoline with Casey and Samantha.
  • Girly Girl with a Tomboy Streak: Jazz loves makeup and dressing up as a princess or a mermaid, and she doesn't play with toy trucks or tools or have any interest in superheroes, but she does play soccer.
  • Innocently Insensitive: When Jazz was very young, she would tell her sister about how she wanted to grow up to be a beautiful lady. Jazz's sister, not realising that Jazz was trans, would giggle and call her a "funny kid".
  • In Touch with His Feminine Side: Discussed. Jazz's family thought she was a boy who just liked to wear dresses, but she turned out to be a trans girl.
  • Lovable Jock: Jazz is a very patient, mild-mannered kid, and she also plays soccer.
  • Malicious Misnaming: Jazz says that some kids "call [her] by a boy name" to rile her up.
  • Personal Raincloud: Jazz once draws a drawing of her with a raincloud over her to illustrate her dysphoria.
  • Pink Means Feminine: Jazz's favourite colour is pink, and she cites that as a sign she's a girl.
  • Princess Phase: Jazz, Samantha, and Casey enjoy dressing up as princesses together.
