"I never thought about it before, but everything he did was for me. He's the only family I've ever known."
- Ben's death. Otis runs out to help his dad and sees he's about to die. You can tell he's absolutely horrified, flabbergasted, and heartbroken at the same time. Ben tries to find something to say, his expression goes back and forth from stern to soft, until he just... slips away in his son's arms. Otis looks like he's about to break down. Which is probably what he does after hugging his father close to him.
- Then there's the aftermath. The whole farm holds a funeral for Ben. Otis is off by himself mourning on his father's watching spot. As he looks at a stream he remembers fishing with his father. It's absolutely heartwarming and heartbreaking at the same time.
- Plus, the fact that Ben died while protecting Etta the hen and the other farm chickens from Dag and his pack. He gave up his own life to save the lives of his fellow animals, and during the whole fight, he doesn't show any concern for himself, even as the coyotes gang up on him and begin to bite and scratch at him mercilessly. His only focus is on the safety of the hens. This only makes it even more painful when, at his funeral, Etta is the one who places flowers on Ben's grave, all while looking absolutely heartbroken. You can't help but think if she doesn't feel GUILTY for what happened.
- After Otis is defeated by Dag and his pack on a futile attempt to avenge his father, he becomes ashamed of himself by not being brave enough to stand up to them like his father did, and the next day, he plans to leave the farm, considering himself as a useless leader and a coward. The scene where he tells Daisy this and how frustrated he feels about how he can't protect the farm animals is quite painful to watch.Otis: You wanna know what happened? I froze, okay? Last night, I didn't run the coyotes off. I couldn't do anything. They're gonna come back tonight, and I can't protect anyone! Everyone here, they all trust me, and I can't protect a single one of them! (punches the wall in frustration)
- Otis visiting Ben's grave and telling him how scared he was facing the coyotes and can't take the responsibility of protecting the farm. Bonus points to Kevin James performance of this scene.Otis: Hey, Pop. I wanted to come by and... Look, you were just a great dad. You see, I... I don't know what I was thinking, but, for a minute, I actually thought I could take your place... But those coyotes? I mean, you'd have stood up to them and you wouldn't have backed down. I gotta tell you, I was so afraid. You know, I know I always said that I wasn't you, and I'm not. But I wish I was... I can't do it, Pop. I gotta go. I'm sorry.
