The book provides examples of:
- Ove's father's abrupt death in the film. Made worse by Ove screaming Pappa.
- Sonja's devastation after she miscarries and becomes paralysed.
- Sonja mourning her father.
- Many of the things Ove says that express how much he misses Sonja.
"Things just aren't right when you're not at home."
- Rune grabbing the hose Ove intends to use to committ suicide with.
- It's hard not to shed a tear during Ove's funeral - especially seeing how many people showed up!
Tropes specific to the 2022 film:
- When Otto initially writes his letter to Marisol he puts it on the nightstand near his bed. When Otto dies some time later, and Marisol finds his body, Tommy finds the letter, surrounded by pictures of Marisol and her kids.
- After Otto fixes Anita’s radiator, he tries to dismiss himself with his garden hose. Her husband, who is a non-responsive stroke survivor, grips the hose, knowing that Otto is attempting to kill himself again. Otto had unknowingly told Reuben about his plans to kill himself and Otto was not expecting him to respond.
- When Otto attempts to shoot himself, he recalls when he and Sonya were on a bus and got into an accident, causing them to lose their baby.
