No Return is a British drama miniseries that aired on ITV in early 2022, and stars Sheridan Smith, Martin Jibson, Louis Ashbourne Serkis (the son of Andy Serkis), Siân Brooke and Lily Sutcliffe. In the show, Smith plays a woman whose teenage son is framed for rape while on vacation in Turkey and fights to free him.
The series contains the following tropes:
- Amazingly Embarrassing Parents: In the first episode, Kathy tries to sing "All About That Bass" on the karaoke to embarrass her children.
- Artistic License – Geography: At one point in the series, Kathy mentions driving "through a fucking desert" to visit Noah; Turkey is one of the few Middle Eastern countries to not have a desert.
- Crusading Lawyer: Ismail.
- Cure Your Gays: Milo-the boy who Noah is in jail for supposedly raping-has a mother who believes in conversion therapy.
- False Rape Accusation: The event kicks off the series and forms much of the conflict is Noah being blamed for raping a Spanish teenage boy.
- Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Noah's father Martin leaks the case to the Turkish press, which ends up causing further problems down the line.
- Oop North: The Powell family are from Manchester.
- Parental Favoritism: Kathy believes that her late father showed more affection to her sister Meg.
