  • Adam Curtis' 2011 miniseries All Watched Over by Machines of Loving Grace was named for the 1967 Brautigan poem.

  • The title characters of the Neko Case song "Margaret vs. Pauline" are named for the female leads in In Watermelon Sugar.
  • "Forgotten Works" by Klaxons is about In Watermelon Sugar, mentioning Margaret and iDeath by name.
  • The music video for "Here I was" by Kat Meoz has the protagonist go on a tour of San Francisco, stopping at various locations featured in Brautigan's stories or on the covers of his books. In the end, the real paper-maché bird from the cover of Willard and His Bowling Trophies appears along with a Brautigan impersonator.
  • Harry Styles has said that his song "Watermelon Sugar" is named after Brautigan's In Watermelon Sugar, though it has little to do with the book lyrically. Apparently, styles just thought the title would make a catchy hook. (Rumors exist, though, that one of Styles' exes is a fan of the book.)
  • Trout Fishing in America took their name from Brautigan's book of the same name.
