- The 2016 film Neruda is a postmodern (and sometimes slightly surreal) account of Neruda's period of hiding during the Chilean Red Scare and how he eventually dodged the manhunt for him and escaped the country by going through the Andes on horseback. The story is interspersed with that of a fictional detective who pursues Neruda, consciously aware of the fact that he is a fictional character but determined to fulfill the goal he was written with in order to establish himself as both the "lead" of the film's story and as equally real as Neruda himself.
