Recap / Yu Gi Oh Arc V Ep 9 Judgment Of The Stars Xyz User Hokuto Shijima

Go To

The first battle to determine the fate of the You Show Duel School, Yuya vs an Xyz summoner named Hokuto Shijima (Dipper O'rion). Shuzo unfortunately picks an Action Field Hokuto knows very well, because the Starfield temple they're dueling on is thematically perfect for his Constellar monsters.

With his powerful Xyz combo to bounce Yuya's monsters to his hand, and his knowledge of the field that lets him keep Yuya from reaching action cards, Hokuto takes an easy advantage. However, Yuya surprises everyone by returning one of his Pendulum Monsters to his hand, activating a new Pendulum Monster in its place so the old one can be summoned to the field and help him clinch the first win for the school.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Absurdly High-Stakes Game: The fate of the You Show Duel School, a legitimate business which if nothing else has property values, is being determined by a few duels.
  • Determinator: Yuya was beaten up a lot this episode, but he refused to go down.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Yuya used the fact that Xyz monster's didn't have levels against Hokuto and won the duel.
  • Jerkass: Hokuto is a pompous jerk that timed his card effects to hurt Yuya. He tops Sawatari by actually trying to seriously hurt Yuya for damaging his life points, when he had the full 4000.
  • Mr. Exposition: Sora acted like one for Xyz summoning, as no one in the main cast really understood it, which was odd as Sora specialized in Fusion summoning. Foreshadowing his true alliance.
  • Punny Name: Hokuto meaning Big Dipper. In the dub, Dipper O'Rion is named after the Big Dipper and Orion constellations, befitting his Constellar deck.

  • Star Power: Hokuto's deck uses Constellars, monsters with a star and constellation theme. (Ironic, as Xyz monsters have no levels.)
