Osaka Castle falls to the fury of Gomora

(First Aired: January 15, 1967)

Screenplay by: Tetsuo Kinjo and Bunzo Wakatsuki

Directed by: Hajime Tsuburaya

After a brief recap of the previous episode by the narrator, the story returns to Ultraman flying through the sky before transforming back into Hayata. Meanwhile, Osamu’s ever-worrying mother meets up with him just before Arashi and Ide arrive to the scene, where Osamu tells them that Gomora had defeated Ultraman and both have left. Osamu still has the lost Beta Capsule with him though, which he stores into the safety of his pockets, but does not tell a single soul. Arashi and Ide return to Science Patrol’s temporary base of operations in Tsutenkaku Tower, where they tell Muramatsu the alarming news of defeat and disappearance that Osamu told them. Dr. Nakaya suggests having some more anesthetic shells brought in from the United States to knock out Gomora again. Agreeing to the idea, Muramatsu tells Hayata and Ide to retrieve a tracking device from HQ in the meantime to let them follow Gomora's underground movement. While Hayata and Ide begin their duties, Arashi is asked to sound the emergency evacuation alarm.

In due time, the people of Osaka are all evacuated (with the exception of Osamu and his parents as Osamu's stubborn father doubts Gomora will reappear near their home and sees no point in fleeing something that could appear anywhere at anytime), and the wait begins. Hayata and Ide return with the tracking equipment just in time, for Gomora resurfaces in the empty streets of Osaka not too long afterwards. The JSDF and Science Patrol fire everything they have on the rampaging Gomora. A hail of powerful blasts at Gomora’s tail succeeds in breaking it off the monster’s body. Injured, the now tailless Gomora proceeds to begin burrowing again, allowing Arashi to successfully shoot the transmitter device at Gomora where it stays firmly attached to the stump where Gomora's tail was. Gomora’s tail turns out to have a life of its own though as it flails around Osaka like a stranded fish before being destroyed by another massive barrage of gunfire. During this time, Hayata briefly considers turning into Ultraman again, only to finally notice that the Beta Capsule is missing.

Back at Tsutenkaku Tower, Fuji watches the tracking transmitter and finds that Gomora is making its way to Osaka Castle. With an important Japanese monument at risk, the JSDF sends troops to the location while Muramatsu instructs Hayata, Ide, and Arashi to head there as well. Meanwhile, Osamu’s mother, listening to live radio broadcasts of Gomora’s rampage remains worried about the monster. Osamu’s father insists they remain inside their home as the monster is not heading their way. This discussion about Gomora suddenly reminds Osamu about the lost Beta Capsule in his pocket, which he wishes to return to Ultraman. So, Osamu, without his parents’ notice, leaves the apartment.

Back at Tsutenkaku Tower, Muramatsu speaks to the Americans (in a thick Japanese accent) on the phone and is informed that they have no more anesthetic bombs for Dr. Nakaya to sedate Gomora, so killing the monster is the only option left. At Osaka Castle, the JSDF waits with a sizable number of tanks ready to fire. The still-tailless Gomora soon pops up in front of Osaka Castle’s gates where it is greeted with a massive bombardment of artillery fire. They do little to heed Gomora, who tosses the enemy about like toys.

Meanwhile, Osamu is talking to some policemen in an effort to let them take him to Science Patrol and return the Beta Capsule for them to give to Ultraman. The cops agree to it and take him in their police car, where they head off to Osaka Castle, which is being plowed down by Gomora like a bulldozer on a sandcastle as they drive there. When Osamu arrives, he runs through the JSDF troops positioned around the site’s perimeter and encounters Hayata, who has managed to blow of Gomora’s nasal horn. Osamu gives the Beta Capsule to Hayata, who thanks the boy on Ultraman’s behalf before sending him to a safe spot where the boy is soon found by Ide and Arashi to be escorted away. Hayata then transforms into Ultraman!

Gomora and Ultraman face off once again, but the tables are turned. Due to its severe injuries and loss of natural weapons, Gomora is easily overpowered by Ultraman, who even manages to snap one Gomora’s brow horns off. The pained Gomora attempts to burrow away, but a Specium Ray from Ultraman fells the ancient beast. With the battle over, Hayata returns to congratulate Osamu for his key role in helping Ultraman overcome Gomora by giving him his very own Science Patrol communicator.

Tropes:

  • Alas, Poor Villain: Science Patrol recognises that Gomora was a victim of human circumstance and offered to have its bones preserved as a way of honouring the fallen creature.
  • Attack the Tail: Science Patrol and the military blows off Gomora's tail, depriving the monster of one of its natural weapons. It still futilely shakes its tail stump in an attempt to use it against Ultraman in their rematch.
  • Aim for the Horn: Gomora gets its nasal horn blown off by Hayata, then one of its crescent-shaped horns snapped off by Ultraman.
  • Bittersweet Ending: Ultraman managed to overcome Gomora and defeat it, but the Osaka Castle is destroyed and Science Patrol notes that Gomora only had to die due to humans removing it from its habitat.
  • Monumental Damage: Gomora destroys the Osaka Castle in its rampage.
