Recap / The Smurfs 1981 S 1 E 17 Supersmurf

Go To

When Brainy accidentally brings Bigmouth into the village to steal food from their winter supply, he decides that the only way to atone for his actions is to use physical strength to get the food back. This leads to Brainy using a magical formula from one of Papa Smurf's spell books that would give him super-strength...though as Brainy would find out much to his disappointment, the spell only lasts for a few hours.

Tropes associated with this episode include

  • The Atoner: Brainy does genuinely feel sorry for letting Bigmouth into the village so that he could steal the village's food supply, which leads to his eventually gaining super powers.
  • Getting the Boot: Brainy, as usual.
  • Instant Expert: It does take a while for Brainy to get used to the power of flight, while his other powers are a snap to use.
  • No Good Deed Goes Unpunished: Despite making up to the other Smurfs by switching the stolen food with rocks, they still tell Brainy to "smurf up" and toss him away from Bigmouth's house.
  • Smurfs Use Violence, Smurfettes Use Communication: Surprisingly, neither Brainy's initial method of using the Supersmurf spell nor Smurfette using her feminine wiles work in getting back their stolen food.
  • Superpowers for a Day: The Super Smurf formula only gives Brainy super powers for a few hours.
  • Take a Third Option: Ultimately, what works in getting the stolen food back.
  • Training Montage: Brainy goes through one to try making himself strong enough to handle Bigmouth, but in the end he collapses.
  • Weather Report: When the Smurfs get thrown out of their own village, Brainy Smurf tries to cheer them up by telling them winter is only a week away. Unfortunately, winter came quickly and Brainy was glared at for the incorrect weather prediction.
