Recap / The Odd Couple 1970 S 2 E 3 Hospital Mates

Go To

With much effort, Oscar pushes Felix into getting a long-delayed operation on his deviated septum to lessen his irritating honking habit. While his roommate is hospitalized, Oscar anticipates a fun-filled interlude with his girlfriend...only to snap a tendon and end up in the same room as Felix.

This episode includes examples of the following tropes:

  • Blind Mistake: Felix returns from the hospital wearing a blindfold as a result of a sinus procedure.
    • When Oscar almost throws him out of the apartment, Felix goes to the closet and mistakenly puts on his ex-wife Gloria's coat. After Oscar clues him in, Felix says "It fits!"
    • At the end of the episode, wanting to freshen the air in the apartment, he mistakenly grabs a can of whipped cream sitting next to the can of Glade.
  • "Everyone Dies" Ending: At the end, Oscar is reading Hamlet to Felix and ends it with the standard "they all lived happily ever after." It doesn't fool Felix, who knows the story.
Felix: Nobody lives happily ever after in Hamlet! (Beat) Nobody lives.
  • Hypocritical Humor: While under pre-op drugs, Oscar and Felix begin getting chummy and declaring a friendship pact. Then the nurses come in and they both point to the other and tell the nurses to take him first.
  • Unplanned Crossdressing: Felix has a bandage over his eyes due to recent surgery. When Oscar throws him out, he stumbles to the closet and puts on what he thinks is his coat, but is actually his ex-wife Gloria's.
  • Would Rather Suffer: Felix had a roommate before Oscar arrived, but the man requested a change of rooms...even though his injuries were serious enough that they didn't want to move him.
  • Yank the Dog's Chain: Oscar plans to have a relaxing day with Nancy while Felix is away...and then he snaps his Achilles tendon. In addition to causing great pain and limiting mobility, this necessitates a hospital trip and the loss of his time with his girlfriend and away from his roommate.
