Recap / The Odd Couple 1970 S 2 E 20 Good Bad Boy

Go To

After doing a photography assignment at a boys' reform school, Felix volunteers his shocked roommate as a mentor to one especially deserving youth, Michael Callahan, claiming that the boy just needs a helping hand. Will his open-minded attitude last when Mike asks his daughter Edna on a date?

This episode includes examples of the following tropes:

  • Boyfriend-Blocking Dad: As one would expect given his usual neurotic personality, Felix does not react well to Edna's interest in attending a reform school dance. Until then, he had been quite accepting of Mike, but once his daughter is in the picture, he about-faces. It becomes worse given that he hadn't explained the concept of sex to her, and when she reveals that she found out already, he freaks out.
  • Brick Joke: Oscar offers Felix his marker as a pledge that nothing will happen to Edna. When she and Mike momentarily disappear, Felix yells at Oscar that he has his marker.
  • Commonality Connection: Mike and Oscar bond over liking sports, gambling, and fast food like chili dogs.
  • Foreshadowing: Before Mike meets Edna, Felix has a scene with his daughter, fussing about her army-like clothes and saying he can't get used to seeing her like this. Naturally, other aspects of getting older produce similar problems.
  • High-School Dance: A variant; the reform school appears to be for teenage boys, and Mike asks Edna to come with him. It includes punch, cookies, and a vote for prom queen. The romantic aspect for the youngsters, however, takes a backseat to Felix's panicky parent drama.
  • Hypocrite: Felix takes Mike under his wing, defends him to the suspicious Oscar, and even insists on calling the school a "correctional facility" to make it sound better. Then Mike asks Edna to the school dance and Felix instantly begins badmouthing him. Outraged, Oscar points this out.
  • Insistent Terminology: Felix corrects Oscar when he calls the place a "reform school", saying that it should be called a "correctional facility". He reverses himself after Edna announces that Mike asked her out.
  • Silent Treatment: After Felix freaks out and refuses to let Edna and Mike date, Oscar doesn't answer him and keeps moving to sit somewhere away from him. When Felix brings it up, he says he doesn't talk to hypocrites.
  • The Talk: Oscar and Felix vaguely try to have "the talk" with Edna before the dance. It consists of a lot of heavily veiled metaphors. Then Edna says that the latest metaphor (centered around baseball) sounds like sex, and Felix completely loses it.
