Recap / The Ministry of Time S02 E04: "The Convent of Time"

Go To

After the debacle in in the previous episode, Alonso has been forced to move to the present, and is now staying at Pacino's house, where both show their small problems regarding the usual (bringing women home, house cleaning, nightmares...). With Alonso on permission, Pacino goes to the Ministry on his own.

When he's there, Salvador has him and Amelia stand prepared, as a warning has come out from 1808. This time, though, it's got nothing to do with El Empecinado: on Christmas 1808, NapolĂ©on Bonaparte visited the Convent of Santa Clara in Tordesillas and had dinner with the abbess, after which he pardoned three prisoners who had been accused of espionage. However, the abbess has suffered a stroke and died, and one of those prisoners is Rodolfo Suárez, Adolfo Suárez's great-great-great grandfather: without the abbess' intervention, the prisoners will be executed, and the future Spanish Prime Minister will never be born. So, not only do they have to help restore history, but they have to bring someone to replace the abbess: Angustias. The secretary, naturally, feels scared by the idea: she's never been a field agent, and knows that she is likely to screw up, but eventually Salvador convinces her to go on the mission.

With Pacino disguised as a priest and Amelia as a nun, the new trio parts for Tordesillas, where they soon have to face their first tests: Marshal Ney (who has come ahead to ensure Napoleon's visit is smooth) demands the convent's treasury to fund Napoleon's campaign, which the nuns need to feed the poor and fix the building. Angustias tries to convince the Marshal to change opinion, but she is unsuccessful. Meanwhile, Pacino and Amelia accompany Rosa, Rodolfo's fiancée, as she brings food to the prisoners - while she tells them of how she and Rodolfo met and fell in love (in a scene with romantic music as the two meet in a meadow). However, when Rodolfo sets eyes on Amelia, he appears to fall in love with the Ministry agent (with the same scene as before, but replacing Rosa with Amelia) - which Rosa notes.

Trouble continues as Angustias learns of the fact she is expected to sing Adeste Fideles during Mass, while Pacino is expected to officiate. Angustias tries, but she is very much off key, and Rosa requests Pacino if she can confess to him: Rosa reveals she feels crushed that Rodolfo seems to have fallen in love with Amelia, and states she plans to become a nun - even though she is pregnant with Rodolfo's son. Pacino tries to convince her otherwise, but it does not seem to work. Mass becomes a rather messy affair, between Angustias' singing and Pacino's lack of training in the issue, but at least one nun seems to have fun.

Meanwhile, in the present, Alonso is having troubles of his own: for example, continuing to get used to modern appliances... and then Ernesto's visit, as the veteran agent comes to help Alonso with his accomodation and with his documentation, which takes a while to get through, and then clothes, an issue that becomes rather complicated.

Back in 1808, in another visit to the prisoners, Rodolfo asks to confess to Pacino, but uses the moment to recriminate him about his apparent approaching (and taking advantage of) Rosa. Pacino tells him that nothing untoward happened, since it was just him trying to console Rosa for what had happened the previous day. Just then, Napoleon arrives, and Angustias' first meeting with him ends disastrously, with Angustias confined to her rooms and no sign of a potential pardon for the prisoners.

With the situation botched, Pacino and Amelia call Salvador, who sends Alonso to the past. The soldier manages to get himself imprisoned with the prisoners, and the team begins to plan their escape - which will save Rodolfo and the others, but might put the nuns and town in danger. And, while Ney confesses to Pacino that he is attracted to him, Angustias decides to take over the kitchen to prepare dinner for a private encounter Napoleon has requested. The emperor himself shows up mid-cooking to aid her, and the two speak about their personal life, with Angustias accidentally mentioning her husband's cheating and Napoleon commiserating with her. Their encounter is, this time, a success, as Angustias convinces him to not only pardon the prisoners, but to also bring much needed coin to the convent. However, when she reports this to Amelia and Pacino, the two of them are shocked - because they have just helped Alonso and the prisoners escape.

Fortunately, Alonso carries a phone, and Amelia manages to warn him to return. The other prisoners do not believe it, but Alonso has Pacino make a particular sign from the convent's tower, convincing them that it is a sign precisely in case Napoleon was convinced. In the end, the four men manage to return just in time, and Pacino manages to convince Ney there's nothing wrong - throwing in a Shout-Out to Casablanca.

History restored, one of the nuns is named abbess, and the team returns home, only to find, much to their shock, that Susana Torres has managed to convince the government to lay Salvador off, bringing up his Military Maverick approach to protecting history and also Julián's disappearance - and now she is the Ministry of Time's Secretary.
