Max Winter: You're just like my dad. Not that there's anything wrong with being ultra-super-competitive.
Miranda Blake: Yes, there is. People don't like you very much.
Max Winter: I like you! Well, I don't mind you.
Max and Miranda take the opportunity provided by the absence of Inés to take on a high-profile Spanish case, the disappearance of pro-cyclist Esteban Domenech during a training cycle in the mountains. Others in the cycling world suspect Domenech of cheating and he fails a drugs test when he mysteriously turns up again, claiming to have been kidnapped. Miranda finds it all highly suspicious and a not particularly legal search of Domenech’s trailer helps her to solve the case. Max challenges Miranda to a race up Sa Calobra in the Tramuntana mountains, with an ice cream for the winner.
Tropes
- Competition Freak: Miranda puts herself through an intense training regime to beat Max in a cycle race.
- Da Chief: Inés is furious that Max and Miranda have taken a Spanish case behind her back. She tells them they have 24 hours to solve it or she’s putting them on currency touts for a month.
- Drugs Are Bad: Domenech has been cheating with massive amounts of steroids and has become aggressive.
- French Jerk: One of the rather arrogant pro-cyclists is described by Max as 'humiliated... off the narcissist scale, and French'.
- Sibling Murder: Averted by Max and Miranda's intervention.
- Twin Switch: The other Domenech brother didn't really die in a car crash in Argentina...
