Recap / The Goldbergs S 4 E 23 Jedi Master Adam Skywalker

Go To

A Plot: Barry and Erica both try to get recognition for something special in the yearbook, particularly battling for "cutest couple" (Barry-Lainey and Erica-Geoff). But their pursuits have to go through Adam, who is now on the yearbook committee with Jackie, and Adam uses this to his benefit by creating a list of demands for his siblings (such as making them refer to him as "Jedi Master Adam Skywalker"). Unfortunately, while sneaking behind Adam's back, the floppy disk containing all the yearbook's data gets damaged.

B Plot: Murray's brother Marvin arrives looking for another handout. Beverly insists that Murray hire him at the furniture store, but this leads to an argument on Marvin's first day.

  • Cutting the Knot: To make it up to Jackie, Adam convinces his siblings and their friends to retype the yearbook...but when it turns out to be a poorly-written mess, instead of wasting even more time editing, Adam just spends his personal savings for a computer specialist to repair the original floppy disk.
  • It's All About Me: The Tag has Barry create another verse to the apology song he planned to sing to Jackie, but it's all about how awesome Barry is.
  • Just a Kid: Adam's still treated like a child by his siblings (not helped by his nerdy interests), and Marvin's still treated by Murray as his screw-up younger brother (not helped by his poor decision-making).
  • Lives in a Van: After Marvin is fired on his first day at the furniture store for ordering a large shipment of beanbag chairs, he reveals to Beverly that he had to sell his condo to settle debts, and currently lives in his car.
  • Lampshade Hanging: After Marvin asks for as much respect from Murray as Adam receives from Barry and Erica, Erica remarks "The timing of this comparison is not good."
  • No Plans, No Prototype, No Backup: In the battle over a floppy disk with all of the yearbook verbiage, Barry's fingers touch the tender inner circle, rendering it unreadable and causing Jackie to get angry with Adam. Jackie does still have a hard copy, but she would have to retype it all by hand before sending a new disk to a publisher. Fortunately, Adam decides to "man up" and fix things so she doesn't have to.
  • Plot Parallel: When Marvin pleads for Murray to let him live with the family, he says he just wants as much respect from Murray as (he thinks) Adam receives from his siblings. Barry and Erica, who are in the room and had just ruined Adam's life after treating him like a child, remark on the coincidence.
  • Sickeningly Sweethearts: Jackie and Adam act like this in the end after the yearbooks are printed, even writing matching statements in each other's copy by coincidence.
  • Take a Third Option: Adam wasn't planning to choose either of his siblings as part of the "Cutest Couple", as learned when they go behind his back. And in the end, as part of his apology, he edits it to nominate himself and Jackie.
  • The Power of Friendship: Subverted; when Adam and his siblings reconcile their differences in order to make amends with Jackie, the yearbook they write out is apparently illegible, so Adam just pays to restore the original copy.
