Recap / The Ghost And Molly Mc Gee S 2 E 19 Jinx

Go To

With a clever, churro-based trap, Jinx jinxes Scratch with a curse that amplifies his bad luck by ten. The only way for the spell to be broken is for Jinx to say his name three times- something she'd never do. Can Molly and Scratch trick her into undoing the hex?

Tropes:

  • Butt-Monkey: Scratch wasn't exactly a walking personification of luck, but Jinx's jinx ups his bad luck even further than it usually is.
  • Chekhov's Gun: Jinx is constantly bringing up the old Chairman, calling him "the One True Chairman". This later gives Scratch the chance to jinx Jinx by repeating it just as she says it.
  • Here We Go Again!: Right after Jinx is defeated, Molly accidentally jinxes Scratch again. Fortunately, she unjinxes him immediately.
  • Hoist by Her Own Petard: Jinx falls under a jinx when Scratch predicts what she is about to say, and is forced to undo the one she placed on him to get out of it.
  • Manipulative Bastard: Of the heroic kind; Molly decrees that they have to trick Jinx into saying Scratch's name three times to lift the curse, so they arrange a lot of traps that will require for her to say "Scratch" in many situations. Geoff and Jeff also show their craftiness by staging a phony game show in which Jinx has to say Scratch's name in order to win a Chairman lunchbox, which would've succeeded had Jinx not seen Scratch and put two and two together. Even then, Scratch tricks her into jinxing herself, and forces a temporary truce for both ghosts to say each other's name for the third time and undo everything.
  • Meaningful Name: Jinx naturally shows off her name by jinxing Scratch with a clever trick involving saying something at the same time.
  • Piano Drop: One of the misfortunes befalling Scratch during Jinx's song, complete with piano keys for teeth.
  • Rule of Three: To undo the jinx, Scratch needs his name spoken three times by the very same ghost who hexed him in the first place- Jinx.
  • Say My Name: To break the jinx, Scratch has to get Jinx to say his name three times. Molly tricks her into saying it, first by planting a sheet of scratch-and-sniff stickers among Scratch's belongings, then by putting itch powder in the Chairman's robes when she tries them on. The third time involves a staged game show, but Jinx catches on just in time.
  • Sequel Hook: Jinx is not coy about not forgiving Scratch, and her parting words imply that they'll see each other again.
Jinx: Why forgive when you can hold grudges?
  • Simple Solution Won't Work: Scratch tries to use his authority as the Chairman to force Jinx to undo her jinx, but she simply states it doesn't work that way and the real Chairman would have known that.
  • Somebody Doesn't Love Raymond: Jinx is the only one in the Ghost World who hates Scratch as the new Chairman, as she feels he is unworthy of the position and that she could make a better Chairman.
