Recap / The Expanse S 02 E 09 The Weeping Somnambulist

Go To

Approaching Jupiter, the crew of the Rocinante realize that their ship is too obvious, so they commandeer the Weeping Somnambulist, unable to convince that crew they mean no harm. The Mars delegation arrives on Earth for peace negotiations, and Bobbie Draper gives testimony that makes it look like Mars started the battle of Ganymede by accident. Alex splits the Rocinante away from the rest of the crew, awaiting their potential need for rescue; Prax is unimpressed with the crew's planning abilities. Upon arrival, Holden and Amos realize something is wrong on the Somnambulist. When they attempt to intervene, one of the Somnambulist's crew members is killed. A research vessel in orbit around Venus discovers that the Eros impact zone is teeming with life, information that Avasarala matches with Bobbie Draper's additional testimony to realize that the solar system is still in danger.

This episode contains the following tropes:

  • Government Conspiracy: It becomes blatantly clear that Mars is intimately more involved in the Ganymede incident than they let on.
  • Internal Reveal: Avasarala learns that Bobbie's squad was attacked by something that wasn't wearing a vac suit.
  • Oh, Crap!: Errinwright can barely hide his when he catches onto the truth of Bobbie's testimony: that Ganymede is another Eros test.
  • Passive-Aggressive Kombat: The summit is full of this
  • The Scapegoat: Private Richard Travis was made to look like he fired the first shot that started the battle of Ganymede.
  • Too Dumb to Live: Melissa, the captain of the Weeping Somnambulist, attacks Holden and Amos, believing them to be Martian marines impounding their ship. Had they really been Martians, Melissa and her husband would have been instantly shot.
    • Later, when Belter thugs come on board and threaten to kill her and take the ship, she does nothing.
