Recap / The Croods: Family Tree S1E1 "Sticky Business"

Go To

With the Betterman's farm a fully-automated paradise, the Croods struggle to live without a purpose and decide to help.

Tropes for this episode include:

  • Desperately Looking for a Purpose in Life: With the constant threat of danger they are used to no longer an issue and the farm almost completely automated, the conflict of the story is the Croods looking for a place on the farm.
  • Fantastic Fruits and Vegetables: Bounceberries are the size of yoga-balls and leap off of their bushes to bounce when they are ripe. "Harvesting" them boils down to trying to catch them and, while delicious, freshly caught berry juice is as sticky as tar that can be dissolved in water.
  • Happy Ending Override: A New Age ended with the Croods and the Bettermans making peace with the Punch-Monkeys and knocking down the wall. Here, the series opens with the reveal that the Punch-Monkeys are so obnoxious as neighbors, they rebuilt the wall to keep them out. Considering Dawn is no longer forbidden from leaving, this can be considered a downplayed version.
  • Laborious Laziness: A Running Gag has Thunk, who is the only Crood who doesn't find relaxation boring, ask someone to bring his drink to him, complaining that it would be too much work to get up to get it himself. As the episode goes on, he walks greater distances to ask this of them, it never occurring to him that it would be easier to get it himself.
  • Mundane Made Awesome: The episode starts with Eep wrestling a Crowverine for one of its tail-feathers to us it as a pen.
  • Rube Goldberg Device: The "system" Phil set up to run the farm is essentially a Stone Punk system of pullies and conveyer belts that automates everything. Naturally, the moment he shows this to the Croods, the "perfect system" falls apart instantly.
