Recap / The Boondocks - S2E7: "Shinin'"

Go To

Riley wants to officially join Thugnificent's Lethal Interjection Crew and earn the chain that signifies such status. He manages to get it, only to have it stolen by a resident bully, prompting various attempts by Riley to get it back.

Tropes:

  • Anything but That!:
    • Leonard is willing to do anything to keep his chain... Except die. Thugnificent claims he was "bitch made".
    • Riley is willing to do anything to get his chain back from Butch... except kissing a man.
  • Awesome, but Impractical: Most of the things in his house Thugnificient brags about:
    • A "Whore-bell", set up as a doorbell with a woman singing the notes, costs far too much because it requires constant staffing.
    • Having a backyard set of waterslides is too expensive to run constantly.
    • Even his watch is so bejewelled that it's impossible to read when the sun reflects off it.
  • "Could Have Avoided This!" Plot: Riley spends the second half of the episode getting his chain back from Butch without Thugnificent knowing. When the rapper finally discovers the news, he reminds Riley that as part of his crew, he could call for help at any time and avoid the struggle.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Riley stood no chance against the larger Butch.
  • The Dreaded: Virtually no one likes Butch Magnus Milosevic due to his erratic bullying behavior. Even the adults have a hard time keeping him in line.
  • Get Out!: The crew tell Leonard this when he suggests adjusting volume during Riley's "Agreeability Test". They even take his chain for good measure.
  • Karma Houdini: Butch does not receive any punishment for his actions. At least Riley gets his chain back because Butch learned it wasn't made of real gold and is practically worthless, causing him to simply toss it away.
  • Loyalty Mission: To get a shiny chain and be part of the Lethal Interjection Crew, Riley has to complete a series of tests. These involve mass agreeing to music tastes, ghost riding a vehicle, and best way to bring in the ladies.
  • Meaningful Name: Butch Magnus shares a last name with Slobodan Milosevic, the infamous dictator of Serbia during the Balkan Wars of the 1990s.
